Heading back up north for the summer? Here's a checklist to close up your Southwest Florida home so it's in the same shape when you return.

Water and plumbing
- Consider turning off the main water supply and turning off the water heater
- Run the dishwasher and washing machine dry, and leave doors cracked to prevent odors
- Check under sinks for slow leaks before you leave
- Replace or check water filters and softener salt
Air conditioning and humidity
- Never turn the AC off completely; set it to keep humidity in check
- Install a fresh AC filter
- Prop open interior doors and closets so air circulates
Kitchen and appliances
- Empty the fridge of anything that can spoil if the power goes out
- Unplug small appliances and electronics
- Run the garbage disposal with water before you go
Security
- Lock every door and window, including sliders
- Put a few lights on timers
- Stop or forward your mail, or have your home watch provider pick it up
